A very scarce and readable history of one of Bomber Command’s premier Pathfinder Squadrons.  Although formed in WWI, the squadron disbanded after the war and eventually reformed in November 1941 with the new Avro Manchester aircraft.  These underpowered and disliked aircraft were rapidly replaced with Lancasters and 97 Squadron participated in the famous low-level Augsburg raid in April 1942 shortly after receiving them.  The squadron also provided crews, including pilot Joe McCarthy,  for the special squadron that formed to attack the Ruhr dams – becoming 617 Squadron.

It was in its role as a Path Finder Force squadron with No 8 and No 5 Groups that 97 Squadron made an invaluable contribution to the war effort which is recorded in impressive detail in this meticulously researched book.
