Impressions of a German Fighter Pilot

By Oberleutnant Gunther Bloemertz

  • Price: £ 10

William Kimber First Edition, first impression 1953. 189 pages plus photos.

Very Good condition hardback book with bright orange boards and gilt titles. Complete with a Very Good condition, unclipped dustjacket with some edgewear, a little loss to the top of the spine and light rubbing. A pleasing copy of this early Kimber which is rarely found in good condition with its striking dust jacket.

These are the personal experiences of a fighter pilot in the Luftwaffe based in North West France from 1940-1945; a member of JG 26 the famous ‘Abbeville Boys’. Against a background of a Germany at first victorious and gradually becoming conscious of defeat, Bloemertz tells the story of his squadron and the losses of his comrades.  He himself was shot down in flames by Thunderbolts in 1943 though he survived the war and passed away in 1994. Since publication in the early 1950s these memoirs have rarely been out of print.

As a contrast to the many accounts of British and American air-war experiences, this first-hand record from the other side makes fascinating reading and it has a spectacular piece of cover art.
