This book is a curiosity. Spitfire Books can offer no explanation as to why or how this book came to be signed by Douglas Bader. It is undoubtedly an authentic signature, characteristic of his hand in the early 1960s, but there are no clues in the book as to its origin. The reverse of the DJ carries an advertisement for ‘Reach For The Sky’ published by Collins in the previous year which was a phenomenal best-seller.
‘No Passing Glory’ was first of several biographies of the man who by the age of twenty-eight had won the VC, a triple DSO, and the DFC with Bomber Command during the Second World War and had also witnessed the use of the atomic bomb. After the war his attempts to found self-governing communities for ex-servicemen ended in financial disaster but helped to settle his lonely struggle for religious certainty and eventually his charity work flourished.
An unusual, probably unique, collectable book with a great Bader signature.
