Tom Sawyer began WWII with 1000 hours of service flying behind him. After five and a half years in Bomber Command, he finished the war as Station Commander at RAF Lissett. In those years he had a remarkable variety of experiences; flying Hampdens, Whitleys, Halifaxes, commanding 78 Squadron, 51 Squadron and later commanding three bomber stations.
In these memoirs, he traces the bombing operations in WWII, describes the men who undertook these hazardous missions, night after night and recalls his own operations, describing vividly, in detail, the tensions, the near disasters and the successes and failures. He also looks into the problems facing squadron and station commanders as well as recounting a host of anecdotes reflecting all aspects of operational bomber missions
These recollections form a remarkable tribute to the brave young aircrew of Bomber Command and this is a very scarce signed copy.
