This gripping and inspiring story of Douglas Bader is probably the most famous pilot biography of them all.
Douglas Bader was a brilliant 21‑year‑old RAF pilot and sportsman. In 1931 he crashed his Bristol Bulldog during an impromptu flying display and lost both legs. Yet he refused to give up. When war began, his relentless drive forced the Air Ministry to allow him back into the RAF. In 1940, he led 242 Squadron through the Battle of Britain. Soon after, he took command of the Tangmere Wing. In August 1941, enemy fire brought him down. He became a POW, but he was already a leading ace with 24 victories and one of the RAF’s most famous fighter pilots.
Bader never stopped resisting captivity. He escaped repeatedly and eventually ended the war in Colditz.
After the war, this bestselling book — and the film starring Kenneth More — ensured he became a household name. His Foundation still offers major support and encouragement to people who have lost limbs.
This copy of the iconic book includes a clear, bold early Bader signature.
