To Commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain,
Spitfire Books is pleased to present for the first time

A mounted original signature of

Group Captain A.G. ‘Sailor’ Malan DSO* DFC*

(1910-1963)

This is one of the most sought-after and scarce of all the RAF Battle of Britain signatures. The signature measures approx. 13 x 4 cm and is mounted on a piece of light card.  It would be perfect for matting with a print or mounting in a book. Also included is the Philip Kaplan biography of Malan, as shown in the photograph.

Group Captain Adolph Gysbert “Sailor” Malan was a legendary South African fighter ace who made his mark in the Royal Air Force during WWII. Joining the RAF in 1935 after a stint in the Royal Naval Reserve, Malan quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Flight Commander in 74 Squadron by 1939. His leadership and tactical brilliance came to the fore during the Battle of Britain, where he commanded 74 Squadron and helped transform it into one of the RAF’s most formidable units.

Credited with 27 confirmed aerial victories, Sailor Malan was one of the highest-scoring pilots to serve exclusively with RAF Fighter Command. He developed the influential “Ten Rules for Air Fighting,” which became standard doctrine for RAF pilots. His aggressive style, sharp shooting, and innovative tactics set him apart as a master strategist.

Decorated with the DSO and Bar, the DFC and Bar, and multiple international honours, Malan’s wartime contributions were immense. He commanded fighter wings and served as Station Commander at Biggin Hill. Though he retired from the RAF in 1946, his legacy as a fearless leader and tactician endures in air combat history

Due to the scarcity of Malan’s signature, there is a reserve of £740 on this item
