Jimmy Edwards (1920 – 1988) was an English comedy writer and actor on radio and television, best known as Pa Glum in ‘Take It From Here’ and as headmaster “Professor” James Edwards in ‘Whack-O’
Prior to that, Edwards was a pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served with No. 271 Squadron RAF, based in Doncaster, which took part in the D-Day landings. His Dakota was shot down at Arnhem in 1944, resulting in facial injuries requiring plastic surgery—he disguised the traces with the huge handlebar moustache that became his trademark. He was a member of the Guinea Pig Club.
These are his hilarious war memoirs, recalling the days when he learned to fly, learned to drink and began his career in showbusiness. From describing playing his trombone in a snowstorm in Canada, drinking Hermann Goering’s champagne in Czechoslovakia, or being shot down at Arnhem and arriving back at base in time for the auction of his personal effects, Edwards was a born raconteur and entertainer.
An entertaining and scare signed memoir.
