“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”
Winston Churchill
Vintage Battle of Britain embossed Metcraft plaque depicting a Supermarine Spitfire flying through clouds, with decorative propeller details around the border. The design is formed from embossed brass/bronze-tone metal foil mounted onto a layered card backing, giving the aircraft and clouds an attractive, raised, three-dimensional appearance.
It was made by the Walsall Lithographic Co Ltd. The first documented examples were marketed during the war with a 1941 calendar attached, though it is likely that production continued for several years after due to their popularity.
Condition: Vintage condition with light age-related wear.
Approximate size: 12 x 9 inches.
This particular plaque is named on the reverse ‘RW Wallens DFC, 41st Fighter Sq.’ in Wallens’ characteristic hand. It came with a few other items belonging to Wallens from an auction in his home town of Stratford on Avon some years ago.
A lovely piece of vintage Battle of Britain and RAF memorabilia with plenty of character and a great connection to one of The Few.
