A Very Good condition hardback book and dustjacket. There is some faint mottling to the inside flaps of the dustjacket and on the endpapers and there is an impressive crested ex-libris bookplate on the front end paper.
A great tale of escape attempts from PoW camps and eventually, inevitably, life in Colditz Castle. A mining engineer by trade, Jim Rogers was commissioned into the Royal Engineers at the beginning of WWII and went to France with the British Expeditionary Force before being captured. After constructing an 175 foot tunnel at Laufen, discovered only 15 feet from freedom, Rogers was sent to Colditz. At Colditz, he utilized his technical expertise to aid in escape tunnels and created a vital daily news service for the prisoners using clandestine BBC radio broadcasts. Ingenuity, incredible perseverance, humour, boredom, disappointments and resilience formed strong human ties which are evident throughout this engaging memoir.
Eminently readable, this book is for anyone with an interest in Colditz and a signed copy is an unusual find.
